Iraqi Ayatollah al-Sistani tells Muslims who live in non-Muslim societies to obey the laws of the land “as long as doing so does not go against sharia law”
Source: The Gazette, June 15, 2006, p. A7
Original title: Imams Unite to Condemn Violence
Muslim Leaders Speak: Sayed Nabil Abbas was among a group of Montreal Shiite Muslim imams who held a news conference yesterday to assure their fellow Canadians they condemn any violence committed in the name of Islam. Abbas explained that 10 years ago, Ali Sistani, the Iraq-based ayatollah for all Shiite Muslims in the world, told Muslims who live in non-Muslim societies to obey the laws of the land as long as doing so does not go against sharia law. "It is forbidden for a Muslim to do anything against the security of a people," he said.
